Learning and Brain Development Lab
3 Visits, 60-90 minutes
Ages: 4 months; 6 months; 8 months
We’re excited to invite families with infants to participate in a study on how attention develops during the first year of life. Participation involves three visits to our lab in Uptown, New Orleans when infants are 4, 6, and 8 months old. At each visit, we ask caregivers and infants to complete several activities:

Many families tell us that our studies are fun and easy for their family, and we’re happy to schedule visits at your convenience, whether that be on weekdays or weekends. We also offer a gift card after each study visit, as well as a small gift for your baby for attending all 3 visits.

We are interested in how infants pay attention to and learn from their surroundings and social interactions during the first year of life. In particular, we’re studying the important role caregivers play in this process.
We’re exploring a variety of factors that might influence development — like attention during play, the size of a family’s social network, and different life experiences. Since this is an ongoing project, we still have much to discover, but you can check out some of our preliminary findings towards the bottom of this page!
We typically schedule visits when babies are around 4, 6, and 8 months old, but there is flexibility within each age window. We are happy to work around your schedule — including mornings, evenings, and weekends — and most importantly, around babies’ nap time!
Absolutely! We understand that babies may need to eat, rest, or take breaks, and we plan for plenty of time to accommodate that — including any additional breaks you or your baby might want at any point during the visit.
Yes, you will be with your infant through the entirety of each appointment to our lab!
No, this study does not involve any invasive procedures. We use physio stickers to monitor your baby’s heart rate, as well as a high-tech camera called an eye tracker to measure your child’s attention and eye movements while looking at a computer screen. Both of these measures are completely safe and non-invasive, with no associated risks.
Yes! We are happy to provide safe transportation to our lab. If needed, we can provide a car seat through a service called KreweCar, or we can arrange a Lyft Concierge ride to ensure safe and easy transport for your family.
Of course! If any siblings need to come along, an undergraduate researcher from our team can look after them them during your appointment. We also have plenty of toys and activities for children of all ages to enjoy while they wait.
